The plan

Three days, one summit, nine thermal pools

Thu Aug 20

Roll in & warm up

  • Departure from Budapest is set by the drivers — it’s ~290 km, 3.5–4 h with a break, so plan on an afternoon arrival in Zuberec.
  • Check in, stretch the legs on a village walk.
  • Optional evening soak at the Oravice thermal springs, dinner together.

Fri Aug 21

Summit day — Brestová

  • Short drive up the valley to the Spálená car park (1,050 m); the Zverovka lot a kilometre back is our fallback if it’s full.
  • Up the Spálený žľab to the Predný Salatín ridge, then the grassy crest to Brestová (1,902 m) — 360° over the whole Roháče cirque.
  • Feeling strong? Optional ridge extension to Salatín (2,048 m), +2.4 km round trip.
  • Down the same marked trail, celebratory koliba dinner in the village.

Sat Aug 22

Slow morning, your pick & home

  • Scorcher? The Orava reservoir has a proper beach at Slanická osada, 35 minutes away — a big, warm lowland reservoir that’s great for a group swim, though no alpine postcard. (The Roháče tarns are protected — no swimming up there.)
  • Cooler or rainy? That’s exactly when the Meander Oravice thermal pools shine — 28–38 °C outdoor mineral pools, rain included in the experience.
  • Dry land more your thing? The timber open-air Museum of the Orava Village is 5 minutes up our own valley, and Orava Castle — Slovakia’s most famous — is on the drive home.
  • And if you’d rather roll home straight after breakfast, that’s completely fine too. Lunch on the road, Budapest by evening.

The route

The exact trail, not an artist's impression

This is the real GPS track we'll walk: up the Spálený žľab from Zverovka, along the Predný Salatín crest to Brestová, and — for those who want it — the ridge on to Salatín.

One-way profile, measured along the track from the Zverovka junction — we plan to start at the Spálená car park. The standard route returns the same way; dashed = optional Salatín ridge.

  • • These figures start from the Spálená car park. If it’s full — an August morning makes that a real possibility — we park at Zverovka 1.1 km back and walk the extra each way, which is the ~11–14 km and ~1,000 m printed on the announcement.
  • • The trail is open Jun 16 – Oct 31 (TANAP seasonal closure the rest of the year).
  • • No cable cars involved — every metre on foot.
  • • Some maps rate this ridge T4 — that tag belongs to the continuation beyond Salatín (sharp rock and chains towards Pachoľa). We turn around at Salatín, before any of that: our stretch is a grassy crest with one dip to a saddle.
  • • The short exposed ridge bit is skippable: anyone can wait at the saddle, no pressure ever.

Live forecast

What the sky is planning

Figures are for the Zuberec valley (765 m) — expect roughly 7 °C less and more wind on the Brestová ridge. Live data from Open-Meteo, refreshed on every visit.

This trip is weather-dependent — the mountains decide

We only book, and only go, if the forecast holds. An exposed summit ridge in the rain or a thunderstorm isn’t worth it — so we’d rather call it than force a bad day.

  1. ~1 week out (Aug 13–14)First real read on the week — settled or unsettled. A lean, not a decision.
  2. 4–5 days out (Aug 16–17)The go / no-go call. This is when the forecast is trustworthy enough to commit and book — or stand down.
  3. 1–2 days out (Aug 19–20)Final summit-day check, mainly for afternoon thunderstorms. We can swap Brestová for a lower-risk plan if needed.

Booking 4–5 days out in peak August risks losing the room, so here’s the hedge: Apartmán Vila Zuberec offers free cancellation until ~Aug 17 — the same window as our go/no-go call — so we can hold it now as a refundable safety net and release it for free if the forecast turns. Ordinary rain doesn’t cancel us; we just pick a gentler day. Only severe warnings do.

Getting there

Optional shared cars from Budapest

  • Budapest → Zuberec is ~290 km, about 3.5–4 hours via Banská Bystrica and Ružomberok.
  • Carpools are arranged after commitments close; fuel and tolls split per car.
  • Coming from elsewhere or on your own wheels? Totally fine — just say so in your DM.

Sleeping

Where we might crash

Nothing is reserved yet — we only book once the headcount is final and the forecast looks good (see below). These two are our current price benchmarks, and we’re confident we’ll land accommodation in this range. Per-person figures are for both nights and include the organisers’ stay and a share of trip costs.

Pack list

What to bring

T2–T3 means proper shoes and layers — nothing technical, nothing to buy specially.

On the mountain

  • Broken-in hiking boots or trail shoes with grip
  • 20–30 L daypack
  • 2 L of water
  • Rain jacket (always, in the Tatras)
  • Warm layer — fleece or light puffy for the ridge
  • Sun cream, sunglasses, cap
  • Snacks / trail lunch
  • Hiking poles if your knees like them

For the weekend

  • Swimsuit + towel for the thermal pools
  • Headlamp (village walks after dark)
  • EUR cash for the koliba and pool entry (~€17 day pass)
  • ID / EHIC card
  • Comfy evening clothes

See you on the ridge.
